In Leaf Trade, the package size refers to the size per unit of a product, along with the unit of measurement used to record its weight or content.
Flower-Based Products: The package size typically reflects the total item weight (e.g., 0.5g, 1g, 3.5g, 14g, 454g).
For cultivated products, the package size is critical because these items are often tracked as weight-based inventory in your Seed-to-Sale (S2S) system. However, when sold, they are typically sold by the unit. This requires accurate conversion from weight-based to unit-based inventory to ensure seamless transactions.
Edibles & Consumer Packaged Goods (CPGs): For consumer packaged goods, the package size often represents the total THC content or volume (e.g., 20mg, 100mg, 500mg) rather than the product's physical weight.
Finished CPGs are generally accounted for as units in your Seed-to-Sale (S2S) system and do not require conversion from weight-based inventory before listing them for sale.
Parsing the Product Name for Package Size
Leaf Trade detects the last size and unit listed in a product name to ensure accurate display and conversion. Including this “Package Size & Unit of Measure” in your naming conventions is essential for:
Seamless future integrations.
Precise conversions from weight-based to unit-based inventory.
Ensuring Accurate Conversions
For a 2-pack of 0.5g pre-rolls, adding “1g” at the end of the product name (representing total weight) ensures accurate conversion:
Without “1g”: The system may incorrectly convert a weight of 1000g into 2,000 units (if it only detects 0.5g).
With “1g”: The system correctly converts 1000g into 1,000 units.
Even if the unit of measure is written as “1 gram” instead of “1g”, Leaf Trade still parses it accurately.
Automatically Pulling Package Sizes from Seed-to-Sale Systems
Before we try to determine a package size by parsing, our integration automatically searches your seed to sale system to pull in an accurate package size. If these fields are not populated for all packages, your account manager will discuss name parsing and help you optimize your data for smooth parsing and conversions.
Biotrack:
In Biotrack we look at the ”Package Weight” field in the “Inventory” table.
Metrc:
In Metrc we look at the “ItemUnitQuantity”, “ItemUnitVolume”, and “ItemUnitWeight” fields, in that sequence.
Dutchie:
In Dutchie we look at the “unitWeight” and “unitWeightUnit” fields.
Package Quantity vs. Package Size
Definitions:
Package quantity refers to the number of items or servings contained within a single unit of a product (e.g., "Single," "10pk"). It is often included in product naming conventions for multipack products to provide clarity to customers.
Package size represents the total weight or content of a single product unit, typically used for inventory management and conversions.
By clearly distinguishing between package quantity and package size, manufacturers and retailers can ensure accurate labeling, streamline inventory management, and provide greater clarity to customers.
Distinctions:
Edibles: A bag of gummies with 20 pieces in each unit may have:
Package Size: 100mg THC (total content)
Package Quantity: 20 gummies or 20pk
Pre-Rolls:
A pack with 2 half-gram pre-rolls has:
Package Size: 1g (total weight)
Package Quantity: 2 (0.5g each) or 0.5g 2pk
A pack with 7 half-gram pre-rolls has:
Package Size: 3.5g (total weight)
Package Quantity: 7 (0.5g each) or 0.5g 7pk
Single-Unit Products: Some manufacturers explicitly label single-serving or single-unit products as "Single" or “1pk” to differentiate them from multipack offerings.
While package quantity can be useful in product naming conventions, it is not critical when discussing package size in Leaf Trade or when converting from weight-based to unit-based inventory.
Typical Industry Naming Conventions
Common Format:
Strain - Product Type - Package Size
Multi-Brand Operators:
Brand - Strain - Product Type - Package Size
Edibles & CPGs:
The format often gets more complex to support clear customer expectations and may additionally include the Flavor, Phenotype, or Cannabinoid Ratios along with the typical components of a product name in the industry.
Handling Variances in Internal vs. External Names:
Product Remapping on Import:
The “Remap” column in Leaf Trade imports enables you to maintain separate product names for internal systems (Seed-to-Sale) and external platforms (Leaf Trade). This functionality:
Helps prevent duplicate product creation caused by minor name changes in your Seed-to-Sale system.
Ensures consistency across platforms by aligning product names appropriately.
If an error occurs during remapping, Leaf Trade support can manually reset these associations.
Dutchie-Specific Naming:
In Dutchie, the product master includes an “Online Title” field, which allows for more control over customer-facing product names. Leaf Trade defaults to the Online Title (if set); otherwise, it uses the internal name or product name field in Dutchie.
This distinction provides flexibility to:
Present polished, customer-friendly names on the storefront.
Keep internal naming conventions consistent for operational purposes.
